My Tips for Staying Healthy While on Vacation: Disney Edition

Vacation is a time to unwind, explore new places, and have tons of fun, but we also want to be mindful of our health and wellness goals! I know that you might feel like maintaining your health while traveling can be a challenge, but never fear - I am here to help! I’m coming to you live from Disney World to share some specific tips I have in case you are headed there in the near future!! Here are some tips to help you stay healthy while enjoying all the magic Disney has to offer. 🏰

1. Plan Healthy Meals and Snacks

Disney World offers a variety of dining options, but it's easy to get caught up in the delicious treats (anyone else love a good Mickey pretzel 🥨 or Dole Whip pineapple upside down cake??....yea me either 😆) Here are a few key tips to keep your nutrition on track:

  • Research Dining Options: Before your trip, look up restaurants that offer healthy choices. Disney's website provides menus for most places. This might be especially important if someone in your party has allergies or dietary restrictions.

  • Pack Your Own Snacks: Bring along healthy snacks such as trail mix, fruit, and protein bars. Disney is totally fine with you bringing in snacks and food (just make sure there are no glass containers). Having tasty, healthier for you options might limit the unnecessary snack purchases. Remember, I’m not against all the treats, but pick and choose (and also make sure to enjoy the ones you do have - you only live once, right?)

  • Stay Hydrated: Florida can be hot, and it's essential to drink plenty of water. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it at water fountains or bottle filling stations throughout the parks. Just like the snacks, Disney is fine with you bringing in bottled water or water bottles, just no glass. And many of the quick service food locations also have cups of water available for free - sometimes you just need to ask!

2. Prioritize Physical Activity

Disney World is perfect for staying active—without even realizing it because you are having so much fun! On average, visitors walk around 7 to 10 miles a day. Here’s how to make the most of it:

  • Comfortable Footwear: Wear supportive shoes to avoid blisters and sore feet. Trust me when I say that being comfortable is much more important than style when it comes to footwear on these long Disney days.

  • Active Breaks: Take breaks on rides or in shaded areas to rest, but keep moving when you can. Consider using stairs instead of elevators when possible.

  • Morning Workouts: If you're a workout enthusiast, start your day with a quick hotel room exercise routine or a brisk walk around the resort. Remember, you are going to be walking A LOT so this might not be necessary, but just an idea if you are awake when everyone else is still snoozing. Personally my kids are up early so I take advantage of that while we are at Disney so we can get even more done at the parks!

3. Manage Stress and Rest

Amid the excitement, it's vital to manage stress and ensure you’re well-rested:

  • Pace Yourself: Disney World is vast; don't try to see everything in one go. Prioritize attractions and allow downtime to relax. We always tell our kids that we will do what they want to do, it just might be at the exact moment. For example, if a ride is broken down or the line is too long, instead of just waiting and wasting time, move on to your next activity and circle back for that one later!

  • Mindful Breaks: Practice deep breathing or meditation during breaks to help stay calm and centered. Disney can be overstimulating for both parents and kids so you might want to include your kiddos in these breaks as well.

  • Sleep Well: Set a reasonable bedtime for yourself and your family to ensure everyone is refreshed for the next day’s adventures. There is nothing worse than a grumpy family member dragging their feet when you are trying to rope drop, believe me - I know!

4. Don’t forget the Sun Protection

The Florida sun is strong, and prolonged exposure can lead to sunburn or dehydration:

  • Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming.

  • Protective Clothing: Wear hats, sunglasses, and lightweight, long-sleeved shirts for additional protection.

  • Seek Shade: Take advantage of shaded areas, especially during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM).

5. Embrace the Experience

Finally, remember that vacations are about joy and making memories. Don’t stress too much over perfection because we ALL know that perfection is not actually attainable:

  • Balance: It's totally okay to indulge in a special treat (or a few!!) or skip some workouts. Balance is key, and a healthy mindset is just as important as physical health.

  • Enjoy the Moment: Be present and enjoy the magical experiences Disney World offers.

By planning ahead and making mindful choices, you can create a vacation that's both fun and healthy. Enjoy your Disney World adventure, and may it be filled with magical memories and wellness. Safe travels! 💕
